Program Review Service

Program Review & Development Service

Since 1987, the Child Life Council has offered a highly effective and comprehensive Program Review Service. These reviews have provided child life programs with onsite review and valuable child life expert opinion to assess overall program strengths and opportunities for improvement, validate child life as an essential component of quality care, advocate for additional resources, and provide direction for future program development.

CLC is pleased to announce the expansion of this popular service with the addition of specialized consultation and educational services. The new Program Review & Development Service now offers multiple options which are designed to support the specific needs and resources of virtually any setting, including hospitals interested in developing a new child life service.

Comprehensive Program Review

The Comprehensive Program Review includes four major phases (1) initial preparation and assessment activities, (2) a 2-day on-site visit from contracted CLC consultants, (3) a comprehensive review report and recommendations, and (4) up to 2 hours of post-review follow-up. This comprehensive Program Review option is an excellent way to assess overall program strengths and opportunities for improvement, validate child life as an essential component of quality care, advocate for additional resources, and provide direction for future program development.

Please visit Comprehensive Review for more information including a sample agenda.

Focused Review/Consultation

This “a la carte” service allows the client to select from a menu of topics in order to design a review or consultation event to meet their highest priority needs or interests. Examples include budget review and fund development, staffing strategies, clinical supervision, clinical preparation programs (i.e., internship or practicum), integration of child life services and interdisciplinary relations, and child life services in specific clinical areas such as NICU and palliative care. Consultant visits may be 1-2 days in length depending upon the topics selected and individual program size and goals. The program fee includes up to 1 hour of follow-up by phone or email with the PRDS consultant.

Child Life Staff Development/Education

Professional Development Hours (PDHs) are necessary for CCLS re-certification and to support ongoing clinical skills development. While budget realities likely limit the number of staff who can attend an annual conference, on-site educational opportunities can be a cost effective way to provide professional development for an entire team of child life professionals, or even an interdisciplinary group. CLC’s Program Review and Development Service now offers onsite education including competency development workshops (e.g., play and healthcare play, preparation skills development, child life assessment and care planning, comfort measures), family-centered care education, and other topics as identified by the client. These PDH/education opportunities may be independent or can be combined with a Focused Program Review.

Child Life Team Development

PRDS consultants are also available to facilitate half-day or full-day staff “retreats” for the purpose of team development, strategic planning, etc. Such events would be planned in close consultation with child life program leadership and could be conducted at the program hospital or off-site at the client’s discretion.

Child Life Leader Development

Formalized mentorship opportunities and consultation to develop child life program leaders, leadership teams, or to recommend leadership models are also available.

New Program Development

To support the development of new child life programs, the Program Review & Development Service offers a comprehensive consultation to review existing structure, explore areas of strength, and address goals for integration of child life services into the healthcare facility. This package will include up to four hours of follow-up in order to support implementation of initial program development goals and recommendations.

Design Your Own Consultation

If other program assessment or development priorities are identified by the client and not included on the current “menu,” every effort will be made to design a consultation to meet the client’s unique needs. Please contact Child Life Council for further information.
