Recertification

Recertification encourages Certified Child Life Specialists to keep current with their profession and acts as a vehicle for demonstrated commitment to continued growth in the field of child life. Patients and families have a right to service provided by child life specialists who have demonstrated entry-level competency and who maintain current knowledge and best practices in the field.

As the field of child life continues to evolve and expand, it is imperative that child life specialists keep current with newknowledge and developments. The recertification process requires CCLSs to document knowledge and skill development over a 5-year period in order to promote continued competency.

In the first quarter of the year certification expires, certificants will receive a recertification reminder notice from CLC. Certificants can then opt to recertify by Professional Development Hours (PDH) or by retaking the Child Life Professional Certification Examination. In the last year of certification, certificants will not be required to submit a maintenance fee, but will submit the appropriate recertification fee instead.

New! Code of Professional Practice

The Child Life Certifying Committee recently introduced a new Code of Professional Practice, which addresses ethical dilemmas, behavior that reflects on the child life profession, and conduct that may put the general public at risk. All Certified Child Life Specialists will be required to provide confirmation of their consent to abide by the code prior to the end of 2013, and they will be asked for their continued agreement during the recertification process.
